MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
Concentration in Actuarial Science (MBA-AS)

The MBA program provides the skills needed by future business leaders and future management consultants, such as creative decision making, leadership, and the ability to work as a member of a team. The actuarial science concentration focuses on mathematical modeling. Qualified students who wish to acquire both sets of skills should enroll in the MBA program with a concentration in actuarial science. In addition to meeting the admission standards for the MBA Program (which is administered by the Robinson College), MBA-AS applicants are also required to meet the admission standards for the MAS Program (which is administered by the RMI Department).

The concentration in actuarial science requires students to have completed courses equivalent to the following with a minimum grade of C (see the most current Undergraduate Catalog for course descriptions):

AS 4120 Mathematical Statistics for Actuarial Science
AS 4130 Mathematical Statistics for Actuarial Science II
AS 4230 Theory of Interest

The concentration in actuarial science requires 12 semester hours of courses selected from the following list:

AS 8340 Life Contingencies I (3.0)
AS 8350 Insurance Mathematics (3.0)
AS 8430 Loss Distributions and Credibility Theory (3.0)
AS 8440 Advanced Survival Models (3.0)
AS 8520 Principles of Property and Casualty Ratemaking (3.0)
AS 8810 Actuarial Science Graduate Seminar (3.0)
MRM 8320 Introduction to Stochastic Actuarial Models (3.0)
MRM 8610 Financial Engineering (3.0)

These web pages reflect the 2006-2007 edition of the Graduate Catalog.

Actuarial science students that have questions about transfer credit, course prerequisite and sequencing, advice on preparing for the SoA and CAS professional exams, and other questions about the actuarial profession should make an appointment with Professor Tom Tredway. Please contact Mike Cohen, mcohen@gsu.edu, to confirm Professor Tredway’s availability and to schedule an appointment.

Actuarial science students that have questions about internship or employment opportunities available to GSU students or questions about the AS Job Fair should contact Dr. Lorilee Schneider, Director of Student and External Affairs.
