MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE
Major in Personal Financial Planning (MS-PFP)

Georgia State University is one of the first universities to offer a graduate degree with a major in personal financial planning. The national accredited Master of Science (MS) degree has evolved in response to public and industry demand for better educated, professional financial planners.

Completion MS with a PFP major will satisfy the education requirement for the Certified Financial Planner™ designation.

Each student's program is planned in consultation with a faculty adviser. Three separate groups of courses are required of the Personal Financial Planning major:

I. Foundation and Prerequisite Courses:
   
  This coursework is dependent upon the student's undergraduate and other academic background. Students with an undergraduate degree in business generally will have met all foundation and prerequisite courses, with the possible exception of ACC 4510 - Introduction to Federal Income Taxation.
   
II. Required Courses in the Major: (24 semester credits required)
   
  MBA 8135 - Corporate Finance
FI 8000 -Valuation of Financial Assets
FI 8240 - Global Portfolio Management
PFP 8400 - Personal Financial Planning
PFP 8420 - Individual Retirement Planning
PFP 8460 - Estate Planning
PFP 8520 - Advanced Studies in Personal Financial Planning
RMI 8200 - Life Insurance
   
III. Elective Courses: (9 semester credits required)
   
  The student is responsible for scheduling his/her courses and meeting graduation requirements. To facilitate this process, the latest Graduate Bulletin and the Office of Graduate Admissions and Student Services should be consulted. Certain courses can be exempted if equivalent courses have been completed satisfactorily. A minimum of 11 required and elective courses are required for the Personal Financial Planning major.
   
 

Three 8000-level graduate business courses must be taken including at least one course selected from the following list:

RE 8020 - Real Estate Equity Investment
RMI 8220 - Employee Benefits Planning
RMI 8240 - Pension Planning
Tx 8020 - Advanced Federal Taxation
Tx 8030 - Tax Research
