John Elger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Risk Management and Insurance at Georgia State University. His degrees include an M.B.A. with a concentration in risk management and insurance from Georgia State University, a J.D. with honors from the University of Texas at Austin, and a B.S. in civil engineering from Stanford University. He currently teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses for the RMI Department's Personal Financial Planning Programs, which include the MS in PFP, the MBA with a PFP major, and the Certificate PFP Programs. Mr. Elger's broad, interdisciplinary experience is consistent with the PFP Program's scope, which draws on course work from various disciplines throughout the department, including finance, law, insurance, taxation, and real estate, among others. He is a Certified Financial Planner™ certificant.
Prior to joining Georgia State's faculty, Professor Elger was a practicing attorney with a prestigious Atlanta firm. He also served in several successful positions at Piedmont College, including President of the college and Associate Professor in the Department of Business Administration. He has an extensive community service record, with current or past memberships on numerous local and state boards, including The Georgia Conservancy, Atlanta Board of Education, Habersham County United Way, Habersham County Chamber of Commerce, Habersham County Democratic Committee, Atlanta Partnership of Business and Education, Urban Studies Institute, and Alliance Theater. Professor Elger is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for AACSB accredited business programs.
